Justice A. Whitaker

Rolake Bamgbose is a two-time Emmy nominated filmmaker and former journalist. Over the years, her work has examined culture shifting people or movements, and experiences affecting people of color and underreported communities around the U.S. and the world.
She received a 2020 News & Documentary Emmy® nomination for directing and producing "Connected to the World," a one-hour special feature for The Weekly (FX), an Emmy-winning original documentary series from the New York Times. She was a founding member of HBO’s multi Emmy-winning Vice News Tonight, receiving a 2017 News and Documentary Emmy® nomination for “Outstanding Feature in a Newscast.” Rolake directed and executive produced Supreme Models (YouTube/Netflix), a six-part series, and her feature film producing credits include the 30for30 ESPN film “D. Wade: Life Unexpected,” and the HBO feature-length documentary “The Day Sports Stood Still”.
Rolake’s storytelling experience as a producer and director spans multiple verticals in news and documentary, where she worked with colleagues to create cross functional content for our digital, social media and editorial teams, to feature film and streaming series. Most recently, she executive produced the second season of the National Urban League Justice Now YouTube series (premiering February 2026), focusing on social justice, equity, and civil rights. She is currently in post production on a feature documentary about the Full Circle Expedition, the first all Black expedition to summit Mt. Everest, which she co-directed and produced.
Rolake is a first-generation Nigerian-American living in Brooklyn, NY with her husband, with whom she co-owns and runs their company, Shango Light Films. She is a member of the Directors Guild of America (DGA), Producers Guild of America (PGA) and the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS). She holds a B.A. in Sociology from Emory University and a M.A. in Journalism from Howard University.
Justice A. Whitaker is an award winning Writer/Director/Producer focused on illuminating stories from around the globe through his work and committed to telling stories representing the global African Diaspora.
Most recently, Justice produced the scripted short film “Food for the Soul” which premiered at BlackStar Film Festival in 2025, winning the audience award for short narrative films and is a 2026 NAACP Image award nominee. In partnership with the National Urban League, he directed the second season of the Justice Now YouTube series (premiering February 2026), focusing on social justice, equity, and civil rights. Other directing projects include the hour long documentary “Milestone Generations” (HBO MAX) in conjunction with Ally and DC, a film that examines the 30 year history of Milestone Comics. He has also produced for Vice News and The Wall Street Journal.
Justice is a member of the WGA and has written for Sesame Street and Moonbug Entertainment. He has lived and worked in South Africa and Ghana and his work is rooted in the breadth and diversity of his global storytelling experience. He is currently in post production on a feature documentary about the Full Circle Expedition, the first all Black expedition to summit Mt. Everest, which he co-directed and produced.
He is a professor of Non-Fiction Storytelling, Narrative Screenwriting and Professional Practices at Pratt University’s Film School in Brooklyn, where in 2024 he was awarded the Distinguished Professor award. Additionally, he is the founder of the AI in Filmmaking Research Accelerator at the University.
Justice lives in Brooklyn with his children and wife, Director & Producer Rolake Bamgbose, with whom he runs their production company Shango Light Films. He is a member of the Writers Guild of America (WGA), and has a B.F.A. in Television & Film Production from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.
